★★★★★ Software Estimation, by Steve McConnell

A great introduction to software estimation techniques, this book is about both the art and science of estimation. Steve McConnell discusses the various methods to derive estimates and reduce the inherent unpredictability. The author tries to keep down the level of complexity when mentioning the different scientific estimation techniques in the industry. Finally, he elaborates on specific issues and challenges in estimation, including organizational pressures.

★★★★ The Mythical Man-Month, by Fred Brooks

Many people call it the classic book of software engineering. It is an excellent book that delves into the human factors that cause software projects to fail their objectives. Even though it was written several years ago, the key principles outlined in the book still apply today. The only problem with the book is that its examples are clearly outdated and most readers may not be able to fully understand the context. It would be an interesting exercise to rewrite the book with more modern examples, as I am sure that the same mistakes are still being made today.

★★★ PMP Exam Prep, by Rita Mulcahy

Definitely, seems to be the preferred book for PMP exam preparation. The quality of the exam questions is much higher than other books, since they force the reader to properly understand the subject. My main negative about this book is not its syllabus content, but rather the unnecessary tone against poor project managers throughout the book. It feels silly, considering the fact the author talks about "PMP'isms" and tips to get through the exam. The unconventional act of putting a copyright notice on every single page of the books showed a hint of out-of-touch-with-reality.

★★★ PMP: Project Management Professional Exam Study Guide, by Kim Heldman

A good book for PMP exam preparation, it covers all the major topics in PMP certification. The book also comes with a CD containing audio files with condensed information on all the chapters. This is very convenient. The quality of the exams was not so good, as I felt that there were a few mistakes here and there, and so that made me lose some confidence in them.

★★★ Software Project Survival Guide, by Steve McConnell

A reasonably good introduction to managing software projects. The author uses a typical waterfall model for the book and emphasizes many important concepts, such as getting requirements right and the need for planning. Overall, a good starter book, but most people should move onto reading other books on software project management.
