★★★★ Refactoring, by Martin Fowler

The author discusses the various types of refactoring that can be done to improve the internal quality of programs. He explains the steps that should be taken to avoid any regression bugs. The author provides guidance on when certain refactoring steps should be taken and when they should not, or other steps taken. Overall a good book, though as the author explains, there are certain system-level refactoring explained only in brief. I would recommend reading this book, along with other books on design patterns and architecture.
