Simon Singh provides a great narrative about the history of discoveries in astrophysics and how ideas about the origin of the universe have evolved. It is similar to Stephen Hawking's book, but much larger and more detailed. It is very easy to read with good illustrations and historical information.

A detailed history of cryptography, the various algorithms for encrypting data and techniques for decrypting messages. Considering the complexity, the book is very easy to read and hard to put down. There are a few puzzles at the back of the book for you to solve - some of them will require much more computing power than your desktop computer offers.

★★★ Fermat's Enigma, by Simon Singh

It starts off well, but becomes too technical and less explanatory at the end. This may be a problem with the nature of the complex proof, but even so, it makes the end less satisfying than it could have.
